Berhampore: Congress MLA of Raninagar Firoza Begum was allegedly assaulted by the Trinamul Congress workers in her own assembly constituency in Murshdidabad on Tuesday morning. She claimed that she was molested by the attackers also. The Congress MLA was travelling in her car then to reach the block development office at Raninagar from Berhampore after learning of the attacks by the ruling party workers on the Congress candidates who went to file their nomination papers. Suddenly a group of ruling party workers blocked the way of Ms Begum’s car and dragged her out on the road near Dosh Mile area at Daulatabad.

The group then beat her with bamboo poles leaving her injured. In protest of the attack Ms Begum blocked Berhampore-Jalangi state highway after receiving first-aid. Her followers joined her in the road blockade.

The Congress later withdrew her agitation following a request and assurance of action against the accused by officer-in-charge of Daulatabad police station Surpriyo Talukdar. Ms Begum later complained, “At Balirghat an attempt was made to stop my car. But my driver dodged past it. At Dosh Mile my car was stopped by the Trinamul workers led by Trinamul block president Aminul Islam. I was forcibly taken out and I was beaten up.”

In our state the chief minister is a woman but a female MLA can not be protected.”
