Kolkata: Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen on Monday expressed concern over the communal violence in Basirhat and its adjoining areas in North 24 Parganas over a “blasphemous” Facebook post and said there was a “reason to worry”.

“Why is it happening? Is it because someone is inciting it or is it politically motivated? There is reason to worry over this,” Mr Sen told reporters on the sidelines of an event in the city when questioned about Basirhat.

The celebrated economist, who is in the city to attend the screening of a documentary on him by director Suman Ghosh, further said, “West Bengal has a tradition of communal harmony. Hindus and Muslims have lived together here in amity for a long time. We have to think why such harmony among people is facing a challenge all of a sudden. We need to think about ways to overcome these challenges.”
