Kolkata: ESI Hospital in Joka was allegedly vandalised by the family members and neighbours of a patient following his death due to medical negligence on Sunday morning.

The deceased, Bibek Sarkar (13), was a resident of Taratala. On September 8 he was rushed to the government run hospital with high fever and vomiting. The boy was however let go after initial treatment.

After returning home Bibek had fallen ill again on Saturday and was taken to the ESI Hospital. Again the boy was treated for a while before he was released. On Sunday when he started vomiting again at home, he was rushed to the same hospital for admission. However, his family members alleged that there was no senior doctor at the hospital.

Bibek was however admitted under the supervision of junior doctors who supplied him oxygen which only worsened his condition. The teenager was then shifted to the Intensive Care Unit where he passed away after some time.

Agitated over his death, his relatives went on a rampage at the emergency department and the Intensive Care Unit  of the hospital. Security guards claimed that they saw many patients fled in panic.

Many medical equipments and stocks of medicines were destroyed due to the vandalism. The city police from the Thakurpukur police station rushed to the hospital and lathicharged the unruly relatives. No one was arrested by the city police till the reports had come in.

Hospital superindent S.K. Chowdhury said that all kinds of efforts were made to save the patient. Bibek’s family lodged a complaint of medical negligence with the police. The body of Bibek was sent for post-mortem.

The vandalism of ESI Hospital has come a day after the vandalism at M R Bangur Hospital following the death of a dengue patient due to medical negligence.
