Body appointed for rehabilitating pipeline slums

Mumbai: After getting slammed by the Bombay high court (HC) over removal of some slums around water pipelines, the state government has set up a committee under the chairmanship of additional commissioner of BMC, for providing basic amenities at the ‘Ever Smile’ Project at Mahul for rehabilitating the slum dwellers.
An issue of slums on pipelies, which are providing water to Mumbai, is going on in the HC since more than 10 years and court directed BMC to remove those slums considering pipelines safety. There are more than 15-20,000 slums along the pipeline from Balkum, Mulund. It’s a tough task for BMC and the state government to rehabilitate them. Both of them have decided to rehabilitate slum dwellers at Mahul, but they are not ready to shift as basic amenities like water, roads, schools; transport facilities and other things are not available there.
Though HC ordered to remove these hutments, state and BMC didn’t act. The urban development department has appointed a high level committee under the chairmanship of additional commissioner, deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SRA, deputy commissioners of BMC who are handling the solid waste, education, transport and other officials who are responsible for providing amenities. State asked the committee to submit the report and the further course of action will be decided soon, told officers of urban development department.
