3 deaths reported; TMC, BJP blame each other for killings
As a TMC supporter was returning home from the rail station, a group of BJP workers carrying sharp weapons attacked him in Burdwan East.
Kolkata: Post-poll violence continues in West Bengal as three Trinamul Congress workers were killed in two separate incidents in two different districts.
Among them, two alone were killed during a clash between the ruling party and BJP supporters at Bhatpara in Barrackpore of North 24 Parganas which has been marked by violence since the Lok Sabha election.
The double murder in the saffron belt came close on the heels of the violent clash between two parties which reportedly claimed six lives at Sandeshkhali in Basirhat of the district. The victims were Mukhtar Ahmed and Mohammed Halim. They were standing in front of their homes when the violence broke out at around 12 am at Aryasamaj area.
Both suffered fatal injuries when a gang of miscreants, allegedly backed by the BJP, hurled bombs on them, according to preliminary investigation. Halim died at the spot. Mukhtar and three injured, including a woman, was rushed to Bhatpara State General Hospital where he was however declared brought dead. The injured were discharged after first-aid. The bodies of both the victims were sent for post-mortem.
The Jagaddal police initiated a case on murder charge and arrested three persons: Lalbabu Das, Indrajit Das and Pradip Shau on Tuesday. The accused are known to be BJP workers in the area. Meanwhile, another Trinamul worker: Joydeb Roy was murdered while three others were injured at Galsi in Burdwan East on Monday night.
Trouble had been brewing the area since morning due to fight between the Trinamul and BJP workers. At around 10 pm when Roy, a mason, was returning home from the rail station, a group of BJP workers carrying sharp weapons and rods attacked him after blocking his way near Kalabagan Ghat.
As three Trinamul workers jumped to his rescue hearing his screams, they were not spared. The four injured were rushed to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where Roy succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. The BJP however denied its role in the murder claiming that the attack was the outcome of a faction feud. The police detained two persons for questioning.
