Kolkata: Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi has advised Jadavpur University (JU) vice-chancellor Prof Suranjan Das to take care of his health and perform his duty accordingly amidst speculation that Prof Das wants to resign from his post.

On Saturday, Prof Das visited the Raj Bhavan and met Mr Tripathi who is also the chancellor of JU, which recently witnessed a strong protest by a section of students who vehemently objected the abolition of the entrance examination for the admission at the undergraduate-level courses.

Since the constroversy, Prof Das has been in the eye of storm. In a statement the Raj Bhavan later said, “Prof. Suranjan Das, vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University today met hon’ble governor and chancellor Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi and apprised him of the affairs of the university and also about his ill health.”

It added, “He also informed that the doctors have advised him not to put strain upon his health. Hon’ble Chancellor advised the Vice Chancellor to first take care of his health and perform his duties in accordance with medical advice.”

Asked if he wanted to tender his resignation on health grounds to the chancellor during his meeting Prof Das later described it as ‘highly confidential’ while refusing to comment further.

Speculation over his resignation has been rife after he dropped hints to the agitating students on more than one occasion that they would not have to see him any longer. Prof Das even admitted to them that he had failed in his role to sort a way-out.
