Kolkata: Union minister Babul Supriyo on Sunday called the Trinamul Congress’ move to a division bench of the Calcutta high court challenging the single bench’s stay order on the panchayat elections as “anti-people”.

He said the BJP has expectation that the people would be able to cast their votes once the poll process would pass though the judiciary. Trinamul minister Sadhan Pande, however, asserted that none could stop the ruling party from getting victory in the rural polls. Mr Supriyo alleged, “Despite atrocities everywhere we have seen the Trinamul has moved to the division bench against the single bench's order on panchayat polls,” he said.

“This is anti-people step because there is no lie in the fact that the opposition parties' candidates could not file their nominations despite seeking to contest the polls. Dhormer Kol Batase Nore (The windmill of God gets moved by air),” he added.

Mr Supriyo further said that there is law and judiciary in the country.” The BJP MP of Asansol, who has lately been embroiled in controversy added, "If the matter passes through the court then those who want to contest the polls and those who want cast their votes will be able to do so. We also expect it will happen certainly."

Countering him, Mr Pande said, "We pray to the people who are god to us. We think neither the court's verdict nor anything else will be able to touch us in view of the huge amount of work done in the past five years under the leadership of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. We will win everywhere and we will work with responsibility."

Late on Saturday night, Triamool supremo and the chief minister of the state, Mamata Banerjee offered puja at the Kalighat temple on the occasion of the Bengali new year.

It is to be noted that a day before the crucial hearing at the Calcutta high court in the crucial panchayat elections, the Trinamul MP Kalyan Banerjee who is fighting the case on behalf of the ruling party also offered prayers at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple on the occasion of the Bengali new year.
