KMC to take anti-dengue drive beyond jurisdiction

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will take its drive aginst mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria beyond its own jurisdiction. The civic body will work in some of the wards under the South Dum Dum Municipality and Baranagar Municipality that lie close to KMC’s jurisdictional area.

“These two muncipalities have contributed to the maximum number of dengue cases last year. A mosquito that carries the germ of dengue can travel to the adjacent wards under the KMC from wards of South Dum Dum and Baranagar civic bodies. Hence, we have decided to go somewhat beyond our jurisdiction,” member mayor in council (health) Atin Ghosh said.

Mr Ghosh will hold a meeting with representatives from these two municipalities at the office of Borough I in North Kolkata on Tuesday for sharing information to ensure their is no communication gap. “We will work in tandem,” Mr Ghosh added. The south Dum Dum Municipality has already registered two dengue deaths. The number of persons affected by dengue is more than 200. DM North 24 Parganas Antara Acharya has directed south Dum Dum and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation to submit a daily progress report on the work they are doing to keep dengue in check.
