Three accused were arrested by the police later. They, however, were released on bail.
Kolkata: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami was attacked by a group of people in front of his residence in Jadavpur. Three accused were arrested by the police later. They, however, were released on bail.
Trouble broke on the night of July 15 when Shami was in his car in front of his apartment building at Katju Nagar near South City Mall where he stays with his wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter Aira.
At around 10.30 pm three men, Swarup Sarkar, Jayanta Sarkar and Shiva Pramanik travelling on a motorcycle, confronted Shami. The trio were in a drunken state. Preliminary investigations revealed that Shami was waiting in his car outside the apartment for the security guard to make his way so that he could drive his car inside.
The trio abused him verbally for taking too much time. They even tried to assault him before the security guard jumped to his rescue. The trio then left, but returned soon.
The apartment’s caretaker, Dhruba Mondal, alleged that the culprits were known for their anti-social activities in the area. According to him, one of them reached Shami’s flat and banged the door, leaving his wife and daughter in a panicked state. The cricketer then called the police.
The police came and examined the housing complex’s CCTV footage, which revealed the trio storming into the complex forcibly. A case was initiated under Sections sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the IPC at the Jadavpur police station.
On Monday, the police arrested Swarup, Jayanta and Shiva, who run a salon in the locality. They earlier faced arrest for creating trouble in the area. On Tuesday, the trio were produced at court where they were granted bail.
