Metro to deploy extra security for Trinamul rally

Who were allegedly killed in police firing in 1993, when the Left Front government was in power.

Kolkata: Anticipating a heavy rush of commuters on July 21, on the occasion of TMC Martyrs’ Day, the Metro Railway has decided to deploy additional security forces at different stations.

The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress takes out Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21 every year in Dharmatala area of central Kolkata to pay tribute to the 13 Youth Congress workers, who were allegedly killed in police firing in 1993, when the Left Front government was in power.

Indrani Banerjee, the spokesperson of Kolkata Metro, said 350 Railway Protection Force personnel, including commandos, will be deployed at different stations to avoid any untoward incident in trains, platforms or station premises during the rush on Saturday.

“Apart from the daily deployment of 250 staff members, an additional 104 security personnel will be posted at 14 Metro stations, including Esplanade, Dumdum, Shyambazar, Chandni Chowk, Park Street, Maidan, Rabindra Sadan and Netaji Bhavan,” Ms Banerjee said.

The entire arrangement will be monitored by the Kolkata Metro’s assistant security commissioner from the security control room at Metro Rail Bhavan, she added.
