Kolkata: BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday alleged that the ruling Trinamul Congress was crying foul over the Centre’s demonetisation drive because people involved in running fake Indian currency racket in West Bengal are associated with the party.

“West Bengal is ranked (number) one in dealing with fake Indian currency racket and the TMC leaders are rattled with the demonetisation decision because people who are involved in such rackets are associated with them. This is the reason why TMC has been crying foul against the move,” Mr Vijayvargiya said during the conclusion of the two-day meeting of the party’s youth cell.

He also said that chief minister Mamata Banerjee achieved nothing after touring the country in protest against the decision. “She should rather focus on what she is supposed to do as the chief minister of West Bengal. The state is in debt of nearly Rs 4 lakh crore and she should focus to reducing this burden,” he said.

Mr Vijayvargiya said 95 per cent of the common people were in favour of demonetisation while the remaining five per cent of “corrupt” people were against it. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes has stopped several illegal activities across the country. Ninety-five per cent of people are happy with it. Only a small number of those with a lot of black money are opposing it,” he said.
