Kolkata: After defying the Centre’s recent direction about how to celebrate the Independence Day in the state, the Mamata Banerjee government has now rejected another directive from the Centre on the Teacher’s Day celebration in the schools.

The latest order, which reached the state government a few says ago, the Centre had called for drawing and essay competitions to be organised in the schools to spread awareness about the Swachh Bharat mission among the students, sources revealed. State education minister Partha Chatterjee informed on Saturday that the Central government’s order was turned down.

Expressing his wonder, he said, “The Centre is behaving in a way as if the state government does not have any common sense. The Teacher’s Day has been celebrated in educational institutions in West Bengal over the years with full respect.” Mr Chatterjee elaborated that the state government would celebrate the Teacher’s Day in its own way like it did in the previous years through poetry and honouring the teachers.

He added that chief minister Mamata Banerjee would attend a programme on September 5 at Nazrul Mancha where the teachers of the schools, colleges and universities would be honoured.

The education minister announced that Ms Banerjee would launch an initiative there to provide school books and bags to the students.
