Kolkata: A cop was assaulted by two other cops and their two friends in drunken state on Dashami night for his protest against them consuming liqour and eve-teasing at a police housing complex in Tollygunge.

The injured cop, Sukh Sagar Singh, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), was posted for the security of Chandannagore police commissioner Ajoy Kumar in Hooghly. Two among the accused were arrested by the police later.

On Friday night, a cultural event was underway at Tollygunge police line when the incident happened. Anish Hansda, Siddhartha Pal, Sib Kumar Singh and Bubai Samanta were consuming liqour and taking drugs at a garage near the venue, according to the injured ASI.

Sources claimed that the garage is used for parking the police vehicles of chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy.

Mr Singh also claimed that the group was teasing the women. Anish is a sergeant working with the Kolkata police.

He lives in flat no T-16 of the same police quarters. Sib is a home guard at the city police, while Bubai works at the West Bengal fire and emergency services. Siddhartha, the son of a retired cop, works at a private company and lives in the police complex.

On Saturday, the ASI said, “All of them were drinking in the open. They were also smoking ganja. They were eve-teasing too. When I protested and asked them to leave, they attacked me. The group kicked and punched me.”

Mr Singh’s son Hrishikesh alleged, “They beat my father so severely that he fell unconscious.” The injured ASI was rescued by other residents who rushed him to a hospital for treatment.

Later, he lodged a complaint with the Jadavpur police station. On Saturday, the police arrested Sib and Bubai. However, Anish and Siddhartha are absconding.

Harindar Kumar Singh, a resident of the police quarters, complained that drinking and eve-teasing have become rampant in the complex during the evening.

Voicing similar concerns, Sadhna Singh, who also stays in the same complex, alleged that her sister was teased many times in the past. “When I protested, I was threatened,” she said.
