Won't allow NRC in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee
Despite BJP's promise, 14 lakh Hindus in Assam were dropped out, says Mamata Banerjee.
Berhampore/Kolkata: On a day when Union home minister Amit Shah in the Parliament reiterated of enforcing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in all states, chief minister Mamata Banerjee ruled out its possibility in West Bengal. She called the detention camps as temporary jails.
Continuing her tirade against AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, the Trinamul Congress supremo indirectly referred him and his organisation as the “biggest agents of the BJP.”
Without taking their names she also blamed them of trying to allure the people with money in Murshidabad with vast minority population before she expressed her concerns over two religious organisations’ presence and ordered the district administration to keep a tab on them.
On Wednesday, Ms Banerjee told the crowd at rally in Sagardighi of the district, “You know that some people doing mischief by instigating you in the name of NRC. Do not believe in the words of an imported leader irrespective of whether he is a Hindu or Muslim.”
“We fight staying on the ground. We are with you. NRC will not happen here. Keep it in mind. There is no reason to worry. Each of you are citizen of this country. ”
Exuding confidence, she said, “We will not allow a single person to be driven out from here. Remember that. What is the NRC? When the Congress was in power in Assam, the NRC was a side-effect and part of an accord there. The BJP implemented it after coming to power there. It was said that no Hindu would be thrown out. But in Assam itself, out of 19 lakhs, the names of 14 lakh Hindus were dropped out. They have been lodged at the detention camps.”
Ms Banerjee added, “Such things in Bengal neither have happened nor would happen as well.
“Some people carrying moneybags from Hyderabad are coming here to claim in meetings to the people that they would fight for them. How can they fight? “Afterall, they are the biggest agents of the BJP. So they can not fight ever. Only we can fight it out.”
