Kolkata: The long-pending students’ union elections in colleges under the Calcutta University will be held in January, officials announced on Thursday. The last time elections in CU colleges were held was in January 2015. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting, which was attened by representatives of four districts - Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas.

The students’ union elections in 65 colleges in Kolkata will be spread over four days-January 27,28, 30 and 31. The students’ union election in 18 Calcutta University-affiliated colleges in Howrah district will be held on January 19. There are 9 CU-affiliated colleges in Hooghly district and 39 colleges in the district of South 24 Parganas. Elections to students unions of these colleges in two districts will be held on January 31.

The authorities of Calcutta University have asked the respective college authorities to decide whether to start online submission of nomination forms for the upcoming students’ union elections.

In a bid to prevent such clashes between the students over filing of nomination forms, several colleges started online submission of nomination forms. Despite 90 per cent of the college students’ union being ruled by the students’ wing of the ruling TMCP and students’ wing of other major political parties were regular affairs during submission of nomination forms.
