Kolkata: Taking a leaf out of the 2009 blockbuster film Three Idiots, the state education department is trying to bring in changes in the school curriculum up to Class 12 to stress on idea-based learning for students instead of remembering the bookish lessons.

“The Three Idiots had tried to emphasise how excellence can be achieved if a person has a concise idea of the subject and not merely memorising the lessons. Our target is to reduce the mental stress on the students and also to make them equipped for being at ease with the various competitive examinations both in the government as well as in the private level. We have to ensure that the students understand the lessons that are being taught in class so that they can write, based upon their idea and not by merely memorising what is written in the books,” a senior education department official said.

The school education department and the syllabus committee is carrying out a survey in the schools across the state to reduce the mental stress on the students.

“The survey is being carried out as per directions of education minister Partha Chatterjee. We are trying to ensure that our students fare well in various competitive examinations in the state level as well as all-India level,” an official of the syllabus committee said.

The official added that there has been complaints that students are not attending schools and are depending on private tuition.

“We are also trying to make classroom teaching more interesting by incorporating changes in the curriculum from time to time,” an education department official said.
