Kolkata: Kolkata Metro Railway celebrated its 33 years of service to the nation on Tuesday.

On October 24 in 1984 this railway network, the first underground railway of the country, started its maiden run from Esplanade to Bhowanipur (now Netaji Bhavan) covering four stations. Various programmes were undertaken in association with the Metro Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (MRWWO) and NGOs to mark the day.

Dr. Anita Chaubey, President and members of MRWWO, organised a metro ride for the underprivileged children from Park Street to Noapara and back where the children participated in cultural programmes.

Eminent percussionist Mollar Ghosh, renowned sitarist Surmani Sujoy Basu and music director and guitarist Pratik Karmakar performed at the programme. Actor Pallavi Chatterjee was also present on the occasion.
