Kolkata Police made elaborate security arrangements for Christmas

2,500 cops deployed across city, majority in and around Park Street.

Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has made elaborate security arrangements for Christmas and deployed at least 2,500 cops across the city.

Majority of the force deployment is in Park Street and places around it. Ten deputy commissioners of police have been posted in Park Street, the main venue of celebrations, to supervise and maintain law and order with the help of their sub-ordinates, including female cops.

Detective department officers have been roped in to keep a tab on the crowd expected to celebrate in Park Street on Sunday. Vehicular movement will not be allowed in Park Street from afternoon till night. It will become a walk-only street from 4 pm to 11 pm. The road has been divided into five lanes for better crowd management. Drones will also be pressed into service for ariel surveillance.

Traffic police personnel will be on the road with breath analyzers to check drink driving. A total of 200 police pickets have been posted at different locations, covering churches, Metro stations, malls, Alipore Zoo, popular hotspots, entertainment parks and other vital installations, according to a senior IPS officer of the city police. Apart from these steps, 15 police assistance booths have been created.

Besides 11 watch towers have been erected including Park Street-Jawahar Lal Nehru Road to keep tab on the revellers. To tackle any emergency two special quick response teams have been kept stand-by in their special vehicles. While 23 divisional patrol teams will give rounds, two teams have been deployed for the riverine patrol in the river Hooghly.

The disaster management group team along with trauma care ambulances have also been included in the security layout.
