Berhampore: A man’s hand was chopped off for protesting the sexual harassment of his minor niece by a youth in a Murshidabad village. The gruesome crime was committed on Thursday evening in Dhamalipara village in Khargram police station area of Murshidabad district.

The victim, Jehangir Alam, was first rushed to local Kandi hospital before being shifted to Kolkata where he was admitted to NRS Hospital. The police arrested the lone accused, Moidul Sheikh. The boti (sharp chopper used to cut vegetables and fish in Bengali households) with which he had attacked the victim was also recovered.

Jehangir said that Moidul had been harassing his niece. “I confronted him and there was a minor altercation. Yesterday he suddenly attacked me with a boti and chopped off my palm when I lifted my hand to save my face,” he added.
