Youth hangs self soon after aunt's arrest by CID
His family members rushed him to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Kolkata: Mystery shrouded a youth’s suicide hours after the criminal investigation department (CID) arrested his aunt, Basanti Chakraborty, a key accused, in the baby trafficking racket even as another doctor was arrested.
On Saturday night, the CID officers caught Basanti, in her sixties, from her residence in Behala for her alleged role in running Joka Millennium Old Age Home and Rehab Centre with its owner Bimal Adhikari (61), who was recently arrested.
Basanti was earlier absconding. At around 2 am on Sunday, her nephew, Tanmoy Chakroborty (28), hanged himself from a ceiling fan with the help of a saree at his residence in KNC Hanspukur Mondalpara of Thakurpukur.
His family members rushed him to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Deputy commissioner of police (South West) Meeraj Khalid said, “Investigation revealed Tanmoy was Basanti’s nephew.”
He added, “He was an unemployed youth living with his parents. He committed suicide by hanging following depression. No suicide note was found. Also no complaint has been received as yet.” The body was sent for post-mortem.
But the CID is not ruling out the possibility about Tanmoy’s past link to the racket. Its officers are now interrogating Basanti who has been remanded in ten days’ police custody by the Basirhat Court in North 24 Parganas.
Meanwhile, Tapan Biswas, a doctor belonging to the Sohan Nursing Home in North 24 Parganas district’s Baduria, was caught by a CID team from her elder sister’s residence at Shripally in Burdwan’s Memari where he took shelter after hiding at a relative’s house in Bongaon for few days.
His house at Thakurnagar was sealed by the CID after the racket was busted. Tapan was allegedly involved in performing the surgeries for deliveries and declaring the newborns dead to their mothers.
He, however, denied the allegations on him and put the blame on another arrested accused, Nazma Bibi. Tapan has been remanded to 12 days’ police custody by the court.
