Woman stabbed for resisting sexual assault

The accused, a trailer driver from Bihar, attacked the victim inside his vehicle after a war of words with her.

Kolkata: A trailer driver stabbed a woman inside his vehicle at Shalimar, Howrah, early on Sunday. The police suspect that he had tried to sexually assault her. The victim, who is in her forties, was admitted at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). The accused, who is from Bihar, is absconding.

The woman, who is from Uttar Pradesh and stays at Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas, was rescued by workers and cops of the Shibpur police station with multiple injuries. A blood-stained knife, a liquor bottle, a purse and a cellphone were recovered from the trailer at the Coal Depot where several other vehicles, including trucks, are parked for unloading of goods. The duo were in an affair, preliminary investigation revealed.

The incident took place at around 3.30 am, when the trailer driver stabbed her as the woman resisted him physically during a verbal duel. As the woman screamed for help, the driver fled. She was rushed to a local hospital from where she was shifted to CMCH. Recording her statement, the police learnt that she prevented the driver as he attempted to assault her sexually in the trailor’s cabin.

The police later questioned the trailer’s owner K Chawla to trace the accused. The vehicle went to Dankuni in Hooghly and returned to the depot at around 2 am, the cops learnt. A case on attempt to murder charge has been initiated by the police.
