Kolkata: A former air hostess was arrested from the city in a joint operation by the Andhra Pradesh police and the criminal investigation department of the West Bengal Police on Tuesday night for her alleged role in a racket of smuggling red sandalwood of around Rs 100 crores. The accused, Sangita Chatterjee (27), is originally from Surya Toran Apartment near Jora petrol pump in Garia, said deputy inspector-general Nishat Parvez. Her boyfriend, Markondan Laxman, is a red sandalwood smuggler who was arrested in November 2015 from Kolkata, Mr Parvez added. “Markondan is now lodged in Madanapalle sub-jail in Tirupathi. He began smuggling since 2002 and earned more than Rs 100 crores.

Sangita was arrested eight months ago by the Andhra police. Two kg of gold and half kg of platinum was recovered from her bank locker along with original deeds of four flats in Kolkata,” Mr Parvez added. He said, “She was granted bail by the court directing her to attend Chittoor court. She did not comply and as a result, a warrant was issued against her.”

Meanwhile, three men — Jamirul Hasan, Mohammed Sabir and Mohammed Chand Alam — were arrested by the CID from a hotel in Kidderpore with 69 rounds of ammunitions.
