Accused was the deceased woman's lover, killed her over monetary demands.
Mumbai: Thane (rural)’s Navghar police on Monday night nabbed a 22-year-old man who was absconding after allegedly killing his lover, a former call-centre employee, and her eight-year-old daughter. The arrested accused, Vinayak Ramesh Vepur, was allegedly in a relationship with Deepika Sanghvi (29), who had separated from her former husband two years ago.
Vepur, who used to work in the call-centre with Deepika before Deepika left the job, told the police that he killed his lover as the latter was jobless and kept demanding money from him daily. He allegedly stabbed her with a knife and strangled her. He killed her daughter Hetavi in a similar manner as she had witnessed the murder. Vepur then fled to Goa and then Shirdi and was arrested on his return to Dahisar.
According to a senior Navghar police official, Vepur killed Deepika in Bhayander following an argument over the monetary demands she made on Wednesday night. The senior official added, “Vepur sold his mother’s jewellery worth Rs 10,000 and fled the city. He left the city and went on the run to Goa and Shirdi. With the help of alert informers, the Navghar police, along with police units from Kashimira nabbed Vepur at Dahisar when he was returning from Shirdi. After questioning, Vepur confessed to his crime.”
Speaking to The Asian Age, senior police inspector of Navghar police, Shrikant Padule said, “The Navghar police will do further investigation and question him in detail to get the facts right.” Vepur will be remanded in police custody. He has been booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in court on Wednesday.
