Jr college teachers call off agitation

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has accepted all demands made by college teachers’ unions, which had threatened to boycott the Higher Secondary Examination (HSE) -related work, said education minister Vinod Tawde in the Legislative Assembly. So now students and parents don’t need to worry, said a senior official of the education department.

Mr Tawde had held long discussions with representatives of teachers’ unions and agreed to all their demands. Mr Tawde has declared the disbursal of '1,182 crore as the government’s monthly contribution for pension, gratuity and '130 crore as the interest component over it. Teachers of 50,026 primary schools and teachers and non-teaching staff of 47,292 secondary schools will be the beneficiaries. These teachers and non-teaching staff were availing of the contributory pension scheme as per a Government Resolution dated November 29 2010, Mr Tawde said.

The government has also agreed to the demand of the teachers’ unions to convert the 42- day strike period into privileged leave. Teachers with PhDs will get special duty leave to participate in seminars and meetings like professors in senior colleges. Meanwhile, the state government has asked  private and unaided schools and colleges to send information about the number of divisions and students in their institutions.
