Man caught for strangling wife 10 years ago
Nirankar Bharat Singh had given the crime branch teams the slip on two occasions in the past, officials said.
Mumbai: The Thane crime branch arrested a person who allegedly strangled his wife in 2008 and had been on the run ever since. The accused, Nirankar Bharat Singh, was apprehended from Karampur in Uttar Pradesh, where he had been hiding for the last 10 years. Singh will be handed over to Narpoli police station by the crime branch.
Singh had suspected his wife’s character and later killed her. The woman, Aarti alias Shantidevi Koli (25), was found unconscious at their Bhiwandi residence in October 2008.
“Singh had used a towel to strangulate his wife. The murder case was registered by Narpoli police station after her post-mortem reports revealed the strangulation marks on her neck,” said a crime branch officer.
Singh had given the crime branch teams the slip on two occasions in the past, officials said. He could be apprehended after crime branch unit I received information that he had returned to his hometown.
A team headed by Shail Chiwad Shetty laid a trap at Karampur village in Uttar Pradesh and apprehended him around 9.30 pm on Thursday. A preliminary probe revealed that he did odd jobs for several years, which helped him remain on the move from one village to the other. He never stayed at one location for over six months to avoid getting apprehended. He will be handed over to the Narpoli police for further investigation.
