Maharashtra govt to give sanitary napkins for Rs 5 to school girls
The decision was taken by Women and Child Welfare Department led by Pankaja Munde.
Mumbai: In an innovative move for school girls, Maharashtra government has decided to make available sanitary napkins at a cost of Rs five with the help of women self help groups. The decision was taken by Women and Child Welfare Department led by Pankaja Munde. However, the activists have termed the decision as vague.
In every village, a women self help group would be selected to make the sanitary napkins. “The scheme has been floated for the school girls and their hygiene. The government will have no direct involvement in the scheme. The self help groups will make available the sanitary napkins for the girls at Rs 5,” Munde said.
The decision is very vegue and does not mention about whom the sanitary napkins wouldbe given, Supriya Sonar from Right to Pee movement said. “When the government is going to give sanitary pads then they should also make available toilets for girls to change it. The announcement does not mention how it will be implemented. If a single pad is costing Rs five then it will be unaffordable for the rural families. Its as good as buying sanitary napkins from known brands. ” Supriya Sonar said.
