Mumbai: Five policemen, including two officers, attached with the Bhandup police station were suspended on Wednesday for celebrating the birthday of a history-sheeter on the premises of the Bhandup police station.

A video of the cake cutting and celebrations went viral, following which an inquiry was ordered and the police personnel — police sub-inspectors Pankaj Shewale and Sachin Kokare, head constable Subhash Ghosalkar, police naik Anil Gaikwad and constable Maruti Jumade — were found guilty.

Officials said that the history-sheeter, Ayan Khan, was arrested in a kidnapping case and later in an assault case in 2010. He was exonerated in both cases.

The officials said that after the video went viral, the deputy commissioner of police (Zone VII) began an inquiry into the incident. Upon verifying the videos and photos of the alleged birthday celebrations, the department decided to suspend the five policemen.

“A report was then submitted by the senior officer to the Mumbai police headquarters, clearly detailing the actions of the five policemen,” said a senior police officer.

Besides having been being suspended with immediate effect, a preliminary enquiry (PE) has also been initiated against the policemen.

The birthday celebration was scheduled in the night when the accused police personnel were on night duty. A separate probe will also be held into the conduct of the night police inspector and the senior inspector of Bhandup police station for poor supervision and alleged lack of discipline.

Upon completion of the PE, the personnel will either be charged in a case or disciplinary action will be initiated against them, officials said.
