Maximum City tops India in cyber crime
City leads list with 980 of 4,172 cases seen in country.
Mumbai: Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, has reported maximum number of cases under cyber-crime (980 cases out of 4,172 cases) accounting to 23.5% during 2016, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. Cyber crime has soared in India, with about 12,317 cases being registered, of which 4,172 cases were registered in Maharashtra alone. Out these, Mumbai accounts for a whopping 980 cases.
Although the number has increased, its detection rate remains less than 35 per cent, said a Mumbai police source. New techniques have been introduced to tackle these problems, but no fruitful results were observed. The police are now being trained to stay up to date with the new types of viruses and cyber crimes.
Deputy commissioner of police (cyber crime) Akbar Pathan said, “The number of cyber crimes going up a notch can be because of Mumbai seeing many online transactions on a daily basis. The police is constantly trying to keep it in control.”
Speaking to The Asian Age, Haren Das a cyber expert, said, “The crimes that are often registered include phishing, online fraud, stalking on social media, email abuse, hacking and copyright. To keep these crimes in tab, one should use safe web browsers.”
The Maharashtra police is looking at three ways to curb cyber-crime. It plans to have a cyber police station in all districts, have cyber labs in all districts and implement the Cyber Security Project (CSP) in the next four years. This is followed by cyber laboratories, equipped with high-end hardware and software tools, in each of the districts for digital forensic analysis. These labs will help collect evidence from mobile phones, CDs, Call Data Records (CDR) and social media.
Over the years, many technological advancements like anti-viruses and security measures have been advised and taken into consideration, but they still don’t ensure complete safety.
Also, the detection rate has consistently remained below 35 per cent despite the firewalls and anti-virus installed on every personal computer and mobile devices that makes various online transactions.
