Mumbai third in cognisable crimes, but officials say population is a factor
Experts stated that with the help of electronic surveillance, the detection rate would also show improvement over time.
Mumbai: Cognisable offences registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were the third highest registered offences in Mumbai, revealed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2016, released on Thursday. The city police registered 7.7 per cent of the total IPC cases, which stood at 39,617 offences of the total 5.13 lakh cases registered in India last year.
“Chain-snatching, which was a menace till sometime back in Mumbai has been brought under control completely by registering robbery cases against the accused persons. We have also taken effective steps to curb other body offences,” said Deven Bharti, joint commissioner of police (law and order).
His view was supported by the state women’s commission officials who stated that the city had far higher population compared to others, which was one of the major factors.
Vijaya Rahatkar, chairperson of Maharashtra State Commission for Women, said, “Delhi saw 1.99 lakh IPC cases as against Mumbai, which is more populous that the national capital, however, the rate of cases in the financial capital has been far less at only 39,617. On the other hand Bengaluru, which has almost half the population of Mumbai, recorded 45,797 cases. This shows that law and order situation in the city is comparatively better than any other city.”
Experts stated that with the help of electronic surveillance, the detection rate would also show improvement over time. “More CCTV cameras and including patrolling and other measures help in curbing the crimes further,” said Y.P. Singh, IPS officer turned lawyer.
While Delhi accounted for 38.8 per cent of the total IPC crimes reported in the cities with the police in the capital recording 1.9 lakh cases, Bengaluru followed closely with 8.9 per cent IPC crimes taking place there.
