Mumbai: Thane police has detained a doctor, and seized old currency notes worth Rs 1.25 crore from him. The police said that the doctor was to hand over the cache to an unidentified man who had promised to get it exchanged with legal tender for a price. The doctor gave evasive replies during his preliminary interrogation, the police said.

The police suspects that the doctor’s money could be unaccounted which is why he did not exchange it by December-end, as per directives of the Centre which demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8, 2016, in a drive against black money.

The police has seized scrapped notes with a face value of Rs 2.90 crore from three persons in the last four days.

The police said, “We had received information from our sources that a few persons were coming in an Indigo car to exchange old currency. Our five officials laid a trap near Jambhali Naka, Thane. At around 8.20pm, a white Indigo car arrived and we raided the car. That’s when we found cash worth Rs 1.25 crore. The accused – in this case a doctor – has been reluctant about opening up on the case.”
