Man arrested over acid attack threat'
The arrest was made late on Saturday, and the police had formed two teams to locate the accused.
Mumbai: Powai police arrested unemployed man Vinayak Gawali (28) for allegedly stalking and threatening to pour acid on the 26-year-old female complainant’s face if she did not accept his proposal for marriage.
The accused who had met the girl, through a common friend at a birthday party started pressurising her to become his friend. The duo met a few times after which the complainant told him that she does not want any friendship with him due to his possessive nature.
The arrest was made late on Saturday, and the police had formed two teams to locate the accused.
According to police sources, the accused Gawali met the complainant in October 2016, following which he tried to befriend her. As the friendship grew, Gawali got possessive and asked her to cut off ties with her colleagues and friends. Following which the complainant broke off all ties with him.
Earlier this year, in February, accused proposed marriage to her. As the victim did not wish to be associated with him, she threatened him that she will report the matter.
Gawali grew abusive and threatened to pour acid on her face, if she refused his proposal.
Following this scene, the victim approached the Powai police and registered a case against him on March 13.
Anil Popale, senior police inspector of Powai police station confirmed the arrest and said, “The accused has been booked under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code that pertains to stalking. He has been remanded to police custody till Thursday.”
