Mumbai: The gambling menace has become a serious concern for the Thane (rural) police, with gamblers preferring high profile areas in discreet residential neighbourhoods to conduct their nefarious hobbies. Nine gamblers landed behind bars after the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) swooped down on a second floor apartment in New Comet Tower in Mira Road late on Tuesday evening.
According to the police, working on a tip-off from an informant, a team led by assistant police inspector, Sunil Shinde raided the apartment-cum-den and arrested nine people who were found to be indulged in placing monetary bets on ‘Teen Patti’, a three card gambling game. Besides gambling material, cash amounting more than Rs 4,860 was seized during the raid.
All the accused have been booked under the relevant sections of the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act.
