Girls make smarter career choices than boys: Survey

Girls are more sure about What do I want to become' , tells survey conducted on 344 Class X students.

Mumbai: In last few years, there has been an increasing trend of higher number of girls clearing the school exams as compared to the boys, similarly, the pass percentage is also more amongst the girls. This trend is not just limited to studies and examinations. The career choices they make after their matriculation are also smarter than the choices made by their counterpart boys. Besides, the girls are more focused when it comes to “What do I want to become’ question, a recent survey has revealed. This conclusion was found through a series of aptitude tests conducted by Sion Education Trust’s D. S. High School in the form of testing  the inclination of the students and through personal interactions with the girls and the boys.

A survey and counselling programme session to  know student’s inclination and the preferences towards a particular subject, was started at D.S.High School in the month of July, i.e. start of academic session itself. Under this programme, all 344 students of Class X were given aptitude test papers and later an interaction was also held with the parents of each student. The entire process was completed this month, i.e. November.

Giving information about this programme, President of D.S.High School Rajendra Pradhan said, “Every student was handed over a report of the aptitude test he or she had undergone. The full-time counsellor in the school spoke personally to parents of every child and explained to them the inferences drawn in their child’s test report. We expect that this process will surely help the students in making better and smarter career selection, as also this will help them in scoring well in their Class X examination.

Girl students study with more concentration and sincerity than the boy students. They are focused about their career too. Many girls revealed to us during the counselling sessions that they were interested in appearing for competitive exams that would make them IAS-IPS. Similarly, many also showed interest appearing for other competitive exams to choose fields like civil administration, police and national defence academy (NDA). The girls aspired to  become catalyst of social change,” said Psychologist and Counsellor at D.S.High School Prajakta Bhatkar. Bhatkar added girls have better management skills and better critical faculty as compared to boys.

“We are advised by our school teachers and counselors to choose the careers where you will get three things - satisfaction, money and honour and then study accordingly and develop your personality in order to be truly successful in life” told Prajakta Pawar, Class X.

Girls are more matured!
The counsellor, Prajakta Bhatkar also told that adolescent girls are more matured than teenager boys. Boys become mentally prepared a bit later than the girls. Boy students are more involved in sports and enjoyments. This is despite we spending an equal amount of time on boys and girls for counselling them regularly.

Parents are changing!
“After the scrutiny of 344 students from Class X, we interacted with each student and his or her parents. A very positive picture was observed, that parents are respectful of students' wishes and do not impose expectations on their children. Parents are well aware of the importance of career tests and career counseling in the changing times” explained Rajendra Pradhan, President of D.S.High School.

Career test on the basis of eight abilities!
“While doing career test such as David’s battery of differential abilities which is a guide to different career paths; various abilities of students like closure ability (ability to check incomplete words or figures and complete them), clerical ability (works related to typing ability), mechanical ability, numerical ability, psychomotor ability, reasoning ability, special and visual ability (ability to grasp things rotating in different directions) and verbal ability (words ability and knowledge of English) are checked and evaluated” said Reva Godbole, assistant counsellor of D.S. High School.
