Maha to appoint lokpal in colleges for student issues

Appeals against the UGRC and IGRC will be heard by the Lokpal.

Mumbai: In a bid to resolve students’ grievances, the state government will appoint a Lokpal (Ombudsperson) in all universities of the state except agriculture universities. The appointment will be made in the next two to three months, state higher and technical education minister Vinod Tawde said Saturday. He also said that Maharashtra was the first state, which would have a Lokpal in the university.

Mr Tawde said that the grievances’ cell for students would be set up in each degree college. The president of the cell would be the principal. If the student made a complaint, the cell would take cognisance of the complaint. If the decision of the college grievances’ cell wasn’t accepted by the concerned student, the matter would be referred to the university grievance redress cell (UGRC). If the students were not satisfied with the UGRC, they could appr-oach the Lokpal with their grievances. There will be an institutional grievance redress cell (IGRC) for the institution which has multiple colleges. Appeals against the UGRC and IGRC will be heard by the Lokpal.

15 kinds of students’ issues can be heard by the Lokpal. The issues include not giving admission on merit, irregularities in admission, refund of fees if the admission is cancelled among others.
