Peter Mukerjea will die if sent back to jail: Mukerjea's Lawyer
Special public prosecutor Kavita Patil however opposed this plea and argued that jail will take proper care of him.
Mumbai: Former media baron and an accused in the 2012 Sheena Bora murder case Peter Mukerjea’s lawyer on Tuesday contended before the special CBI court that ‘he may die’ if he is referred to jail after his discharge from hospital.
Requesting the court to grant Mukerjea bail for at least months post heart surgery, his lawyer contended that he needs peaceful and hygienic condition to recover.
Advocates Shrikant Shivde and Amit Ghag informed special judge J.C. Jagdale that Mukerjea had undergone the heart surgery last week at a private hospital and he is likely to be discharged from the hospital in a week. They requested the court to grant him bail at least for six months so that he gets ‘a chance to live’.
Mr Shivde contended that sometimes it takes around a year to heal (post surgery) and rejection of bail is as good as signing his death warrant.
He contended that it is not possible to get peaceful and hygienic condition, which is required for the post-surgery recovery, at state-run JJ Hospital or at the Arthur Road jail.
Special public prosecutor Kavita Patil however opposed this plea and argued that jail will take proper care of him. The judge is now expected to pass order on bail plea on Thursday.
