Mumbai: The Mumbai police has filed a first information report (FIR) against two unknown men who beat a dog to death in Sion and left the canine’s blood-soaked body to rot on the street.

The post-mortem of the animal was done at the Bombay Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Parel (BSPCA), Mumbai. The autopsy report is awaited.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) received a call on its emergency helpline number (+91 9820122602) from a concerned local, who informed that two men had beaten a dog to death in the Sion area of Mumbai and left the animal soaked in blood on the street.

Emergency response assistant Akash Tiwari said, “This dog endured the terror and agony of being beaten to a bloody death. This horrific attack is exactly why PETA India urges the public to report incidents of cruelty to animals immediately, as this kind caller did, so that perpetrators can be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

The FIR has been registered under section 119 of the Maharashtra Police Act (MPA), 1951, which prohibits cruelly beating or torturing any animal; and sub-sections 11(a) and (l) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, that prohibit inflicting unnecessary pain on any animal and killing any animal, stray dogs included, in an unnecessarily cruel manner, respectively. Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, prohibits the killing or maiming of an animal, which carries penalty of a five-year jail term.
