Cop drives in inebriated state, held

Mumbai: A police constable attached to MHB police station was arrested early on Monday for allegedly driving a police van in an inebriated state.

The 41-year-old was accosted by the public near Borivali west late on Sunday and questioned for driving in a zigzag manner.

He was booked under sections pertaining to drunk driving Monday morning.

According to police sources, the accused who is attached to the motor transport department of MHB police station in Borivali, was driving the police van in a drunk state.

A source added that Sanap was on general patrolling duty on Sunday but was drinking and driving the van instead.

Some locals observed that he was driving badly on the western express highway (WEH) near Borivali at 11.30 pm on Sunday, after which they stopped and checked him only to discover that he was smelling of alcohol.

No sooner, the locals informed the police which arrived on the spot, put Sanap through a breath analyser test and finding him under the influence of alcohol, arrested him under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Maharashtra Prohibition Act,.

Mumbai police spokesperson and deputy commissioner of police (operations) Deepak Devraj told The Asian Age, “Since the constable was arrested for a bailable crime, he has been granted bail early Monday morning. However, there will be an internal inquiry on the matter.”
