Mumbai: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, who has been on the forefront of agitations against North Indians, on Sunday said that North Indians should introspect themselves for getting insulted everywhere in the country. He also called for making the domicile certificate compulsory to curb the migration of outsiders in the state.

“India is like the European continent, every state is like a separate nation. Every region has its separate identity, language, culture etc. The outsiders should respect and understand the region where they have gone,” he said while addressing a programme organised by Uttar Bhartiya Mahapanc-hayat, an organisation of the North Indian community, at Kandivali

Due to his anti-North Indian stand there was tremendous curiosity about what the MNS chief will speak at the programme. In his speech, which he made entirely in Hindi, Mr Thackeray said he wanted to make his stand clear and appealed to outsiders to respect the local culture.

Mr Thackeray appealed the North Indians to introspect as to why their states have remained undeveloped. “Nearly 70-80 percent of Prime Ministers, including Narendra Modi, are from UP. But still they could not bring industries to their state. That’s why you are forced to move to other states and get insulted there. Where is your self-respect? Why questions are not being asked to those leaders?” he asked.

“The Interstate Migrati-on Act clearly says that when you are moving fro-m one state to another, you should register your deta-ils with the local police st-ation. But it is not happening. The domicile certificate should be made compulsory in every state and laws should be drafted like that to curb migration,” Mr Thackeray added.

Saying that priority should be given to Maharashtrian youths in jobs, the MNS chief gave references about the statements made by former president Dr Rajendra Prasad and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. “Even they had said that there is a need to ensure that locals should not be deprived of jobs. If that happens, there is bound to be a conflict,” he said.

“The influx of outsiders is putting tremendous str-ess on Maharashtra. It wi-ll only come down if every state makes progress and there is a healthy competition among states,” Mr Thackeray said.
