Mewani, Khalid to attend event in Mumbai today

Mumbai: Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani, who is a Gujarat legislator, and Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid will attend the ‘India Students Summit’ in Mumbai on Thursday.

Chhatra Bharati organisation, a student wing active in Mumbai University, has arranged the seminar in Bhaidas Auditorium of Mithibai College for the whole day. Other student leaders like Richa Singh of Allahabad, Bedabrata Gogoi of Assam and Pradeep Narwal of Haryana will also be present for the summit.

Meanwhile, there are FIRs registered against Mr Mewani and Mr Khalid for provocative statements at Shanivarvada, Pune. According to complaints, their statements were provocative enough and that led to the violence in Bhima Koregaon on Monday. Almost 50 cars were damaged and one youth lost his life. The reason of his death is still unknown. Complaints have been registered at Deccan Gymkhana police station of Pune.

On this backdrop, Mr Mewani and Mr Khalid’s presence in Mumbai would be important. Both will speak on the current political situation in country. It is expected that Jignesh Mewani would speak on the Bhima Koregaon violence as well as Maharashtra Bandh on Wednesday. The issue has been raised in both houses of parliament also.
