Mumbai: A sessions court in Alibaugh on Friday granted bail to Sameer Bhujbal, nephew of senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal, in connection with a case of cheating registered against him and a few others for not handing over apartments to buyers even after more than five years of accepting the booking amount.

Around two weeks ago, the Panvel police had formally arrested and sent Sameer to judicial custody in connection with the cheating case. Sameer was already in judicial custody after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2016 in connection with a money laundering case and will be able to walk out of jail only after securing bail in the ED case.

Sameer was arrested because he, along with Chhagan Bhujbal’s son Pankaj, was one of the directors of the Devisha Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, which runs a housing project in Navi Mumbai called Hex World Housing Society. In 2010-11, Devisha Infrastructure is reported to have collected '40 crore from investors after promising to provide houses in Hex World by 2013-14. The company, however, failed to fulfil its promise and hence on complaint from buyers the case was registered.
