375 drunk driving cases registered during Holi
Around 11,000 traffic violations reported in city.
Mumbai: The cases of drunken driving in Mumbai during Holi celebration went up from last year’s 317 cases to 375 this time around. These numbers were, however, overshadowed by the 2,403 cases of speeding registered across the city on Friday. In all Mumbai police and Mumbai traffic police have registered around 11,000 cases, which includes riding triple seat, rash driving, parking in no parking zones, among others.
DCP Deepak Deoraj, said, “We had deployed proper security to curb any nuisance from happening during the festive season. Therefore a total of 11,018 offences were registered during Holi 2018. The maximum numbers of motorists were booked for riding without helmet and drunk driving.”
There are 4,417 cases registered under riding without helmet, riding triple seat violators are 186, drunken driving cases are 743, rash driving cases are 25, No parking cases are 348, others 2896.
In 2017, traffic police officers said they had registered 3,769 cases of traffic violations including drunken driving, riding without helmet, travelling triple seat and rash driving between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
For the festival of colours this year, Mumbai police had deployed 6,500 policemen in addition to the 2,500 traffic cops to ensure no untoward incidents took place in the city. Precautionary measures like the formation of anti-eve teasing squads, night patrolling, city-wide nakabandi and deployment of women constables were taken to maintain the law and order.
While the number of cases registered by traffic police is higher than last year (4,621 cases were registered in 2017 compared to 5,355 in 2018), the increase can be attributed to the presence of more officials on the streets and easy of issuing e-challan to offenders.
According to police officials around 52 people were reportedly admitted to civic hospitals on Friday, due to heavy drunken state, use of low quality colour powders, which harmed skin. Meanwhile, Thane Traffic Police have registered 656 cases which includes all types of traffic violations.
