Mumbai: Over 1300 answer sheets of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination kept in the office of the Block Development Officer in Kaij in Beed district were reduced to ashes in a fire, police said on Sunday.

While most of the answer sheets gutted in the blaze on Saturday evening belonged to three subjects, the answer sheets of Mathematics and Urdu bore the maximum brunt of the fire, said MV Naik, Sub-Divisional Officer of Police, Kaij.

The exact cause of the incident is being investigated, he said.

The fire was first spotted by the staffers who subsequently informed the police.

The HSC exam for class 12 started from February 21 and will end on March 20.

An official said answer sheets of certain subjects from the area are collected and sent to the BDO office, from where they are distributed for checking.
