Mumbai: The Tilak Nagar police has arrested a 65-year-old woman for allegedly murdering her 75-year-old husband at their residence with a paver-block in broad daylight on Sunday. The woman was arrested on Tuesday after which she confessed to the crime, claiming that his illicit relations with two women in the neighbourhood had driven her to commit the crime.

The case was registered against unknown persons initially and the police were trying to establish the identity of the killers. The accused woman, Dhanudevi, had claimed that she saw her husband Chotelal Maurya lying in pool of blood after she returned home on Sunday afternoon.

“The accused revealed that she had hit a paver-block on her husband’s head owing to the illicit affairs he allegedly had. She was arrested soon after and will be produced in a local court on Wednesday,” said Shahji Umap, deputy commissioner of police, Zone VI.

The accused had claimed to have left for some work outside and returned after an hour only to find her husband in pool of blood earlier.

The woman raised an alarm following which the neighbours rushed to see what had happened. Mr Maurya was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Mr Maurya, owned four shops in the same structure where he was staying with his wife. The couple has four sons and two daughters from whom only one son stays with the couple, officials said.

Owing to the ambiguity of whether he had fallen accidentally leading to the injury or was murdered, the police had earlier registered an accidental death report. However, his autopsy reports revealed of head injury leading to death, following which a murder case was registered.

A case of murder has been registered against Dhanodevi and further probe is underway. The police will record detailed statement of the woman and the couple’s children.
