Mumbai: Three persons fell into a septic tank in suburban Chembur Wednesday morning.

The trio was rescued and admitted to Sion Hospital.  The incident took place in the morning when a truck carrying sand was passing atop the septic tank and due to its weight, the septic tank caved in and a woman and two girls aged two and 11 years fell inside.  The incident took place at Mhada colony, Vashi Naka, Chembur. Locals informed the police. The team of fire brigade personnel rescued the victims.  The 11-year-old girl has been identified as Mariyam Shaikh and her health is stable and improving.

According to Mariyam’s relative, her leg has been injured but she is feeling better. Mariyam is still in hospital.  Nafees Shaikh, who resides near the place of the incident, received a message on his phone and rushed to the spot.  He said, “Atif Shaikh and Ramesh, Javed Bakyi and Raju saw the incident. We tried to help people stuck inside the septic tank. While removing the debris, we realised that there was a small child stuck inside the debris. Till then, the police and fire brigade personnel reached there and started the rescue operation.”

The residents, with the fire brigade officers, helped the victims to come out of the septic tank. The Congress leader and the candidate for south Mumbai for the Lok Sabha elections visited the place and demanded a high-level inquiry. He also blamed the local corporator and MLA for the incident. A complaint should be filed against the culprit and strong action should be taken.
