Mumbai: A 16-year-old boy was killed and four other children were critically injured after their car overturned and crashed into a divider on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Saturday morning.

The Lonavla rural police has registered an accidental death report in the case of the 16-year-old. In total, nine minors and two adults were riding the car.

The deceased is a Thane resident and all riders belong to Hindalekar family. According to Lonavla Rural Police, “The victims were travelling from Pune to Thane. When the driver tried to overtake another car, he lost control and the car flipped thrice before crashing into the divider. The children and the driver were immediately taken to the Lokmany Hospital in Nigadi, where Jayesh Hindalekar (16) was declared dead on arrival. The four children were said to be seriously injured.”

Recently around May end, a private tour bus that was on its way to Karad, toppled over at Khandala near Valvan village injuring 25 of its passengers.

While only five of these passengers suffered serious injuries, no death was reported. A Lonavla police official said, “The driver is currently absconding and a few witnesses have told us he looked extremely tired while driving the bus, especially when the bus had a stop for the passenger to get refreshed.”

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has always been the site of many accidents. In fact, it was only three days ago that an NRI, attending a wedding, died in an accident on the expressway near Kamshet tunnel.
