Mumbai: The Bombay high court will hear the petition for Maratha reservation on August 7 instead of August 14. On Friday, petitioner Vinod Patil informed the court that the Maratha Kranti Morcha is conducting an agitation throughout the state and so far seven people have committed suicide and therefore an urgent hearing needs to be taken. At the last hearing, the court had wanted to know what the state backward class commission had done so far.

On June 29, the HC directed the state government to put forth the progress made by the  commission, which was constituted last year to study the socio-economic situation of the Maratha community.

The court had also asked the government to produce data collected till July 31 on the economic condition of Marathas in the state at the next hearing. The government had sought time till September for the same but court granted time till July.

The bench comprising Justice Ranjit More and Justice Anuja Prabhudessai expressed its displeasure over the request.

When the bench asked senior counsel Ravi Kadam, who represented state government about the progress that has been made in the work and what could be done to speed up the process, the state counsel said the process of collecting data was still on.
