Mumbai: A double whammy of strong torrential rains and high tide have afflicted the city of Mumbai as the strong sea waves have started throwing the garbage sewage along the Marine Drive in Mumbai. The garbage dumped by the sea has turned the iconic Marine Drive into a necklace of trash.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had deployed 55 labourers, two large compactor, three dumpers, one JCB and three mini compactors to clean garbage across the shore. Civic body workers cleared nearly 25 metric tonnes of garbage from Marine Drive, working continuously in pouring rain and foul smell.

On Saturday, not only Marine drive area but also Girgaon Chowpatty, Dadar, Mahim, Versova and Gorai Chowpatty roads were seen covered with loads of trash.

According to BMC officials, workers collected eight metric tonnes of garbage from Gorai, 110 tonnes from Versova, 50 tonnes from Dadar and Mahim beach and five metric tonnes from Girgaon Chowpatty.

BMC Public Relations officer (PRO) Tanaji Kam-bale said, “Due to heavy rains and and 4.90 meter high tide on Saturday, heaps of garbage were seen along side Marine Drive. The civic body workers have collected 188 metric tonnes of trash from all seashores till the evening.”

This comes as heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours had been forecasted in Mumbai. The Mumbai police had also issued advisory asking residents to take adequate precautions and travel only if necessary.

Similary, last year after high tide, the municipal workers collected 12 metric tonnes of garbage along Marine Drive. Much of the trash on the promenade comprised plastic waste apart from garbage dumped by ships near the Mumbai coast.
