Mumbai: After the Bombay high court slammed the Maharashtra additional director general of police (law and order) for briefing media over alleged “urban naxals”, Leader of the Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has demanded clarification and action from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on the issue.

Mr Vikhe-Patil has objected to Mr Singh's press conference and demanded Mr Fadnavis’ intervention. Mr Vikhe-Patil has claimed that his stand has been vindicated by the high court and that it is Mr Fadnavis’ responsibility to clarify his position.

While adjourning the petition where the National Investigation Agency (NIA) demanded an inquiry into the alleged threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s life and the recent arrests of five human rights’ activists, the Bombay HC slammed the Maharashtra police for briefing the press on a matter that is sub-judice.

“I have already asked the state government about Mr Singh’s status. Is he the government’s spokesperson! In what capacity did he address a press conference which was absolutely not necessary. Now, the honourable court has said it. I hope that the police will go to court rather than brief media henceforth,” said Mr Vikhe-Patil.

He also demanded that Mr Fadnavis clarify his stand. “Mr Fadnavis is also the home minister. So, the matter of the ADG addressing the press conference is being heard in the HC as it comes directly under him. He should clarify his position and also ask officers to follow restraint,” said Mr Vikhe-Patil.
