Mumbai: To mark their protest against the “lackadaisical” attitude of the government towards commuter grievances and the recent stampede at Parel-Elphinstone in which 23 people died, a group of people halted trains at Kalwa and Jogeshwari on Tuesday.

The two rail roko protests were held around 9 am at both these stations.

The trains were shut for 10 minutes as the protesters did not want to cause inconvenience incontinence to the already harried rail commuters.

A railway official said, “The protestors had already told us that they will be bringing the train to a halt for only a few minutes, as a token protest and did not
want to disturb the commuters who were going to work after the long weekend.”

There was a protest outside the office of general manager of Western Railway at Churchgate. NCP women wing leader Chitra Wagh was detained by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Churchgate station.

A candle light vigil was also held at Elphinstone Road on Monday night. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by its leader Raj Thackeray plans to take out a protest march from Metro Cinema to Azad Maidan on October 4.
