Activists claimed the MMRC started removing soil after the collector questioned asked why it was trying to fill up the low-lying plot without the requisite approvals.

Mumbai: Activists have alleged that many trucks were seen removing mud in bulk from the 30-hectare plot of the Aarey Metro carshed on Thursday and Friday. According to the activists, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) allegedly started removing the soil after the collector questioned them on why they were trying to fill up the low-lying plot without the requisite approvals.

Last month, the MMRC contractor was seen dumping mud on the plot, where citizens have alleged that the statutory body is carrying out land filling work with permission for the same from the district collector’s office.

Witnessing the debris and mud dumping in the Aarey lands, activists had filed a complaint with the district collector.

“After our complaints, the district collector enquired with the MMRC about the land filling activities without proper permission. They denied having indulged in any such activity. Now,
in the last two days, a huge bulk of mud was seen being removed from the 30 hectare plot in Aarey Colony,” said Zoru Bhathena, an activist.

A MMRC spokespersons  have denied the allegations. The spokesperson maintained that

MMRC was removing the debris that had been dumped by unknown miscreants. “We are removing loose soil and also the debris dumped by unknown elements illegally over the period of timeto reach the parent soil and to prepare ground for earth work for the depot. This is an essential activity before beginning the filling work,” said the spokesperson.
